Sky-High Impact: The Women Leading Nigeria’s $2.5 Billion Aviation Sector

nigeria's aviation sector

LAGOS — Traditionally seen as a male-dominated frontier, Nigeria’s aviation industry—contributing a staggering $2.5 billion to the national GDP and supporting over 216,700 jobs—is undergoing a profound transformation.

In 2026, the narrative is no longer just about women in the cabin; it is about women in the cockpit, the boardroom, and the regulatory seat.

According to a March 1 report by Nairametrics, a new generation of female pioneers is breaking through the “glass hangar,” steering multi-million dollar operations and shaping continental policy despite a challenging high-cost environment.

The Flight Path: From Cabin Crew to Commanders

As of 2026, Nigeria ranks as Africa’s fifth-largest airline market. While the sector faces operational hurdles—including the removal of tax exemptions that threaten to push fares toward the ₦1 million mark—these women are providing the strategic vision needed for resilience.

Feature ProfileRole / AchievementSector Impact
Olubunmi KukuManaging Director, FAANOverseeing the modernization of 31 national airports.
Toyin OlajideMD/COO, Air PeaceManaging West Africa’s largest private airline fleet.
Adefunke AdeyemiSec-Gen, AFCACShaping “Single African Air Transport Market” policies.
Capt. Chinyere KaluFirst Female Commercial PilotThe pioneer who opened the flight deck for all who followed.
Olanike Nafisat BalogunFirst Female Pilot, Nigeria CustomsLeading the NCS Airwing and mentoring young public service pilots.

Breaking the “Public Service” Barrier

One of the standout stories of 2026 is Deputy Superintendent Olanike Nafisat Balogun. A native of Osun State, Balogun’s journey from a Customs Assistant in the cabin crew to a licensed pilot for the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) exemplifies the shift in institutional thinking.

  • Public Service over Profit: Despite lucrative offers from commercial airlines, Balogun has chosen to remain with the NCS, enhancing their aerial surveillance and operational capabilities.
  • The Mentor Effect: Her presence in the Airwing unit has sparked a surge in female applicants for technical roles within Nigeria’s paramilitary aviation arms.

Continental Leadership: The AFCAC Connection

The influence of Nigerian women now extends beyond domestic borders. As Secretary-General of the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), Adefunke Adeyemi is currently spearheading the implementation of the Yamoussoukro Decision.

Her goal for 2026 is full skies—ensuring that an airline from Lagos can fly to Nairobi or Dakar as easily as a domestic flight, reducing costs for 1.3 billion Africans.

The Challenges of 2026: A High-Stakes Environment

The rise of female leadership comes at a critical time for the industry:

  1. Tax Reforms: New laws reintroducing VAT on aircraft and spare parts are projected to spike operating costs by 7.5%.
  2. Infrastructure Gaps: Managing Director of FAAN, Olubunmi Kuku, is currently navigating the “Ikeja Road reconstruction” and other land-side logistics to ensure airport access remains seamless.
  3. Pricing Scrutiny: The FCCPC recently uncovered “price manipulation” patterns during the 2025 festive season, putting pressure on female COOs to balance profitability with consumer protection.

World Women’s Month

In March 2026, as the world celebrates Women’s Month, Nigeria’s aviation sector stands as a testament to what happens when “passion meets action.”

From Rukkaiyatu Bashir Ribadu (MD, Eagle Jet) to Elizabeth Jack-Rich (Founder, Elin Air), these leaders are proving that innovation and strategic vision are not defined by gender.

In an industry where a single engine part can cost a fortune, these women are proving to be the most valuable assets on the balance sheet.
