Lionel Messi at 38: The GOAT Who Refuses to Age

How the Argentine magician continues to defy time, gravity, and every expectation we had about football greatness

Messi 3

Let me tell you something about watching Lionel Messi play football at 38 years old – it’s like watching someone cheat at life, and we’re all perfectly fine with it.

Just a few days ago, I watched him curl in another one of those trademark free kicks against Porto, and honestly? I had to rewind it three times.

Not because I missed it the first time, but because my brain couldn’t process that a 38-year-old man was still doing things that would make players half his age weep with envy.

Today marks Messi’s 38th birthday, and frankly, the man is making aging look like the biggest joke ever told.

While most footballers his age are either retired, sitting on benches, or desperately clinging to relevance in lower leagues, Messi is out here collecting trophies like they’re Pokemon cards and making Inter Miami look like they stumbled into a cheat code.

The Numbers Don’t Lie (And They’re Absolutely Bonkers)

Here’s the thing about Messi’s career statistics – they read like someone accidentally hit the wrong button on a FIFA video game. 866 goals and 386 assists in official matches?

That’s more than 1,250 goal contributions! To put that in perspective, most professional footballers would be thrilled to have 200 career goals, period.

But wait, it gets better. This man scored 672 goals for Barcelona alone. Six hundred and seventy-two! That’s a record that will probably outlive all of us.

In today’s football world, where players hop between clubs faster than I change Netflix shows, the idea of someone dedicating 17 years to one club and becoming their all-time leading scorer feels almost mythical.

His 474 La Liga goals and 192 assists aren’t just records – they’re monuments to consistency that would make a Swiss watchmaker jealous. Nearly two decades of excellence in Spain’s top flight, and he never seemed to have an off-season. Never!

The Crown Jewel Moment That Made Us All Cry

I’ll be honest with you – I thought Messi’s international career might end in heartbreak. We all did. The man had come so close, so many times, that it felt cruel. Like watching someone reach for their dreams only to have them slip through their fingers repeatedly.

Then 2021 happened. Copa América victory number one. Okay, good for him, I thought. Finally got one for Argentina.

But then came Qatar 2022, and oh my goodness, what a tournament that was! At 35 years old – an age when most footballers are thinking about retirement planning – Messi orchestrated one of the most beautiful World Cup campaigns I’ve ever witnessed.

Messi 3

Every match felt like watching a master painter add final touches to his magnum opus.

That final against France? Pure poetry. Pure drama. Pure Messi magic when it mattered most. When he lifted that golden trophy, it wasn’t just Argentina celebrating – it felt like the entire football world exhaled collectively. Finally, the greatest player of our generation had his World Cup moment.

And just to make sure we all knew he wasn’t done, he went ahead and won another Copa América in 2024. Because apparently, one wasn’t enough!

Eight Ballon d’Ors? Seriously?

Let’s talk about those eight Ballon d’Or awards for a second. Eight! The first player to win four in succession, and then he just kept adding to the collection like he was collecting rare stamps.

Each one of those golden balls represents not just a year of excellence, but a year of being definitively better than every other footballer on the planet. In a sport with millions of professional players worldwide, being voted the absolute best eight different times is… well, it’s almost incomprehensible.

The Miami Miracle and MLS Revolution

When Messi signed with Inter Miami in 2023, I’ll admit I was skeptical. Was this going to be another case of a European superstar coming to MLS for a retirement victory lap? Boy, was I wrong!

This man single-handedly transformed American soccer’s global profile. Suddenly, MLS matches were appointment television. Season ticket prices went through the roof. Kids across America started asking for Messi jerseys instead of LeBron James ones.

His current deal – reportedly worth $50-60 million annually, plus revenue-sharing with Apple TV, Adidas, and MLS – isn’t just a contract; it’s a masterclass in personal branding. The fact that he’s also positioned to potentially own part of the team? Genius level business acumen.

The Empire Beyond the Pitch

Speaking of business acumen, let’s talk about Messi’s off-field empire, because it’s just as impressive as his on-field heroics. With a net worth hovering between $850 million and $1 billion, the man has basically created his own economic ecosystem.

That lifetime Adidas deal alone could be worth over $1 billion throughout his career. One billion dollars! For kicking a ball around in the right shoes. I mean, I get excited when I find a good deal on sneakers at the outlet mall.

His investment portfolio reads like a textbook on smart diversification: luxury real estate across multiple continents, the MiM Hotels chain, MÁS+ hydration drinks, Messi Fragrances, and his Play Time investment firm backing Silicon Valley startups.

The man went from street footballer in Rosario to global business mogul, and he made it look effortless.

The Man Behind the Magic

What really gets me about Messi is how he’s managed to stay grounded despite achieving everything humanly possible in football. His Leo Messi Foundation has been quietly changing lives since 2007, building hospitals, funding scholarships, and creating opportunities for kids who might otherwise never get a chance.

During COVID-19, while everyone was hoarding toilet paper, Messi donated over €1 million to hospitals in Spain and Argentina. No fanfare, no social media campaign – just pure generosity when the world needed it most.

His role as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador since 2010 has supported initiatives for child welfare, clean water access, and education programs globally. And in 2025, he partnered with Luis Suárez to establish Deportivo LSM in Uruguay, focusing on developing young football talent.

The Ageless Wonder

Here’s what blows my mind most: Messi is 38 years old and still playing at a level that would be considered world-class for a player in their prime. That recent free-kick goal against Porto wasn’t just beautiful – it was a middle finger to Father Time himself.

Most athletes peak in their late twenties or early thirties. Messi decided that conventional wisdom was more like a gentle suggestion. He’s maintained his record of never being eliminated in a group stage of any tournament – club or country.

Ever! Do you know how ridiculously consistent you have to be to maintain that kind of record?

What’s Next for the GOAT?

As we look toward the 2026 World Cup, the big question everyone’s asking is: Will Messi suit up for Argentina one more time? At 39, he’d be attempting something almost unprecedented in modern football – competing at the highest level in his fifth World Cup.

Part of me wants to see him ride off into the sunset, his legacy secure and unquestionable. But another part of me – the greedy football fan part – desperately wants to see if he’s got one more miracle in him.

Whatever he decides, one thing is absolutely certain: Lionel Messi has redefined what it means to be great at football. He didn’t just break records; he obliterated them. He didn’t just win trophies; he collected them like they were going out of style.

At 38, while most of his contemporaries are coaching youth teams or working as TV pundits, Messi is still out there making defenders look foolish and goalkeepers question their career choices.

That’s not just athletic longevity – that’s pure, unadulterated greatness refusing to bow to the inevitable march of time.

Happy 38th birthday to the greatest footballer who ever lived. Here’s to whatever magic you’ve got left in those famous left foot of yours!

Because honestly, we’re all just lucky to be watching.
