The New Guard: Ifeyinwa Osime Ascends to the Chair of Access Bank

In a milestone move for Nigeria’s banking sector, Access Bank Plc has announced the appointment of Mrs. Ifeyinwa Osime as the Chairman of its Board of Directors. The transition follows the retirement of Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN, who concluded his regulatory tenure on January 29, 2026.

Announced via a corporate filing by Access Holdings Plc on February 2, the appointment signals a period of strategic continuity and reinforced governance for a bank currently engaged in an aggressive global expansion.

A Legacy of Strategic Stewardship

The outgoing Chairman, Paul Usoro, leaves behind a bank that has successfully navigated a decade of unprecedented growth and corporate restructuring. Under his oversight, Access Bank solidified its subsidiary status within the Holdco structure and maintained its position as a dominant force in African equities.

His successor, Ifeyinwa Osime, is no stranger to the inner workings of the institution.

Having joined the Board in 2019 as an Independent Non-Executive Director, Osime has spent the last seven years chairing pivotal committees, including those focused on Sustainability and Governance. Her elevation is a clear endorsement of her deep alignment with the bank’s core mission.

The “Imoukhuede Endorsement”

The Group Chairman of Access Holdings, Mr. Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede, CFR, was unequivocal in his support for the transition.

“Mrs. Osime is a principled and experienced leader,” Aig-Imoukhuede stated. “I am confident that under her leadership, the Bank will continue to advance its strategic objectives of delivering sustainable value… in the pursuit of its vision to become the World’s Most Respected African Bank.”

This endorsement carries significant weight as the Group continues its broader leadership reshuffle, which included the 2025 appointment of Mr. Innocent Ike as Group CEO.

The Osime Profile: Law, Ethics, and Governance

Mrs. Osime brings a formidable legal and corporate background to the Chair. With decades of experience, her resume is a masterclass in cross-sector leadership:

  • Legal Rigor: A background spanning McPherson Legal Practitioners and the Nigeria Reinsurance Corporation.
  • Insurance Expertise: Previous board roles at Coronation Insurance and NSIA Insurance.
  • Banking History: Prior experience on the board of Bank PHB (now Keystone Bank).

Her specific focus on Human Resources and Sustainability in her previous roles suggests that her tenure will likely prioritize ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) metrics—a critical factor for international investors as Access Bank scales its presence in the UK and European markets.

A Renewed Governance Structure

The appointment of Osime is the final piece of a jigsaw puzzle that began after the tragic passing of former Group CEO Herbert Wigwe.

With Aig-Imoukhuede back as Group Chairman and Innocent Ike at the helm of the Holdco, Osime’s role at the bank level provides the independent oversight necessary to balance aggressive growth with regulatory prudence.

As Access Bank pushes further into 2026, the market will be watching how this “new-look” leadership team integrates its diverse expertise to protect shareholder value while navigating the complexities of African and global market expansion.

Executive Digest: Access Bank Leadership

  • New Chairman: Mrs. Ifeyinwa Osime (Appointed Feb 2026).
  • Outgoing Chairman: Mr. Paul Usoro, SAN (Completed tenure).
  • Strategic Priority: Transition from a leading African bank to a “Globally Respected” institution.
  • Key Strength: Decades of multi-disciplinary experience in Law, Insurance, and Board Governance.
